7 Tips for Getting That Flawless Fashion Shot
We all know that good photography can make or break you in the social media and blogging world, especially when it comes to fashion. Without hiring a photographer, getting the perfect image can be tricky. But by following these seven, top tips you will be able to give any professional a run for their money.
1. Embrace the Natural Lighting
One of the great things about outdoor photography is the natural light which is better than any Instagram filter. Use the sunlight as your personal spotlight and allow the shadows casts by leaves or buildings to add an extra dimension to your images.
If you want to make the most of the outdoors, try shooting in the golden hour which is the period just after sunrise or before sunset. The beautiful, softer light will make you, and your clothes, look flawless.
2. Be Prepared
Just like professional photographers, you should be prepared for all weathers. Your shoot can be compromised by weather changes, location restrictions or wardrobe malfunctions which is why you always need your kit bag at the ready. Here are a few essentials we think you’ll need when on location:
- Makeup wipes
- Sewing kit
- Blister Plasters
- A spare outfit
- An umbrella, of course!
3. Colour and Contrast
Contrasting or coordinating the colours in your outfit with your backdrops can make your images striking in several different ways. For example, if you’re shooting an all-black look, why not contrast it against a bright, fresh background? This will help show off the outfits dark details and make for an eye-catching contrast.
Alternatively, shooting the same look in a dark forest will give off an eerie vibe, enhancing your image in a different way altogether. Of course, you can also play with the contrast and colouring on your camera settings whilst shooting or after, whilst editing your photos, if you want to experiment with different styles.

4. Use Props
Incorporating props in your fashion shoot is a great way to add diversity and texture to your images. Props don’t have to be extravagant to capture interest, holding a simple flower or posing in front of a vintage car (but please be careful), can add a unique, and very Vogue-esque, touch.
5. Stay Unique
Trust in your fashion and stay true to your style. It can be tempting to follow other influencers and shoot looks that fit industry trends, but originality and uniqueness are what will make your blog stand out from the crowd.
Collaborating is the oldest trick in the influencer book and it is no different for fashion photography. Having a fellow fashion influencer to help direct, inspire and shoot your looks will give you a wider variety of pictures, ones which you simply couldn’t achieve if it was just you and your camera alone.
Collaborating will allow you to do everything from exchange fashion and location ideas, to making more comfortable outfit changes (you now have someone to keep an eye on your stuff). It will also allow you to shoot together, work off each other’s energy and try poses such as talking or laughing together.
7. Relax and Enjoy
It’s true what they say, if you are uncomfortable it shows. The most important fashion photography tip we can give you is to relax and enjoy your shoot.
Wearing and styling outfits you love will result in effortless images which you and your audience are bound to adore. Shake off any embarrassment you have about posing in public, people are only looking at how great your outfit is.
We hope this has inspired you to go out and take your own flawless pics. If you use any of our tips in your fashion photos we’d love to see them, so tweet them over to us @CollectivEdge.
